In 2010 Glass Co WA partnered with local Registered Training Organisation Progressive Training Pty Ltd to deliver the Certificate III in Glass and Glazing on site in their Geraldton window manufacturing and glass processing facility.
Since commencement our training arrangement, Glass Co has completed 7 apprentices, and currently has 8 apprentices being trained at various stages in their apprenticeship. This includes 2 apprentices employed by external local glazing companies, and 1 gaining certification through recognition of prior learning.
Having the ability to train in house benefits the business in many ways. “We find it increases productivity and staff morale, as transferring skills and knowledge to less experienced staff is an important role. We also find that our employees enjoy being involved in the process of developing an apprentice and providing them with guidance.”
“For apprentices, there is the advantage of not having to travel away from home for extended periods and the stress that can sometimes accompany this. Apprentices benefit from learning from people they know and trust in a familiar environment.”
Training is provided by a blended delivery of on-the-job training, classroom theory sessions and online components. Glass Co has 3 trainer and assessors on site who are actively involved in the day to day functioning of the business and are always available outside of formal training sessions to work with apprentices.
To further support apprentices in the workplace, Glass Co WA adopted the AGGA Embedded Mentoring Initiative. Glass Co has 2 embedded mentors within the workplace maintaining regular contact with apprentices to assist with career development and goal setting to ensure successful completion of their apprenticeship. “Mentoring plays an important role in apprentice training. It is empowering for our apprentices to have a strong support base and have this readily accessible within the workplace.”
Glass Co WA are passionate about providing quality training and are continually liaising with industry to further develop training delivery to benefit both apprentices and employers. For further information contact Nancy Kirby at firstname.lastname@example.org or (08) 9920 9507.
